Ready to start a new project? 

Here are some tips to help you get started.

1. What you want to make? It wlll be easier get help at your LYS with pattern & yarn selection if you have a basic idea of what type of project you want to do - hat, scarf, afghan, baby sweater, etc.
2. Be Flexible. Having an idea is good, having a very specific picture of what you want or definite color may close your eyes to other possibilities. Sometimes what you would like to do is not available the way you picture dit or may be more of a challenge thatn you would like. 
3. Be honest about your skill level.  Seeking a challenge is good and will help you expand your skills. Have a plan of action for if you get into difficulty. Do you have someplace to go for help? Many LYS will charge to help you and most will not help you at all if you did not purchase your materials from them. 
4. What's your "Mistake Quotient"? Are you able to identify and fix your own mistakes? Can you rip out our work and get started again? Can you read your stitches and know where you are? Our workshop Fixing Mistakes will help you improve your ability to deal with issues and be more confident in your work.

Have a Pattern already?

• What size will you make? If you are making an item for someone else, be sure you know the correct size to make. Get all necessary measurements before selecting the yarn amount. 
• Plan for the unexpected. Purchase extra yarn for safety, particularly if you will be close to the recommended amount for a size. It is better to have too much, than have to spend time finding a specific dyelot. 
• Which yarn is right for the project? Purchase one skein/hank and work a swatch of the actual patttern stitch. This is different than a gauge swatch, but can be used to check your gauge. Do multiple stitch repeats and multiple pattern repeats to create a swatch that is  6" by 6" or larger. You want to see the density of the fabric (too loose or too tight), how it drapes (lays and hangs), and is it appropriate for the project. Sometimes yarn that looks good and feels good is not right for the project.
